AXIS OF EVIL: Perforated Praeter Naturam (Qualiatica Press, 2004)
Stamp art navigated and curated by Chicago artist Michael Hernandez de Luna.
On January 29th 2002 in his State of The Union address former US President George W. Bush described Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as the “Axis of Evil”. Bush asserted that “states like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger.” The term recalls the Axis powers of WWII when German Nazis, Italian Fascists, and Japanese Imperialists composited their wet dream of territorial expanse. Despite drawing national and international criticism, Lil' Bush would go on use the term many times throughout his presidency.
In 2004 Chicago-based Publishing house Qualiatica staged a show drawing on visual and written dialogues on the mythology of evil through postage stamps. Curated by Chicago-based stamp artist Michael Hernandez de Luna, AXIS OF EVIL features 110 profane and confrontational works of stamp art from 54 international artists across 11 countries.
